Our History

A Seed Ready to Grow

In the fall of 1989, St. James Assiniboia Seniors Centre was a seed ready to grow into something great. At this time, a public organization meeting was held at Deer Lodge Centre. At this meeting, a steering committee was established to research and develop a plan for a centre that met the needs of the growing 55+ population.

By the fall of 1991, a Board of Directors had been established and a founding meeting had taken place. The next task was to find a space for the centre to be housed and by the following summer, a temporary space and mailing address was attained at the St. James Civic Centre. At this time our purpose and goals were confirmed and approval of first Constitution was attained.

Centre Officially Incorporated

On June 19, 1992, St. James Assiniboia Senior Centre was officially incorporated.

By the fall of 1993, our centre had settled its roots, renting space from Deer Lodge Centre and on November 16, 1993, SJASC officially opened with 682 founding members.

From a seedling to a statuesque tree, over the past 24 years, our Centre has blossomed into a place that our members have come to see as a second home. Now known as St. James Assiniboia 55+ Centre (SJAC), we have over 850 vibrant members and high hopes – up to the tree tops, if you will-‐ for our Centre and our members.
